saankhya darshan mein, prakruti ke teen gun bataae gaye hain - sat , rajas aur tamas. tamas gun ke pradhaan hone par vyakti ko satya-asatya ka kuchh pata naheen chalta, yaani vo ajnyaaan ke andhakaar (tam) mein rahata hai. yaani kaun si baat uske liye achhi hai va kaun si buri ye yathaarth pata naheen chalta aur is svabhaav ke vyakti ko ye jaanane ki jijnyaaasa bhi naheen hoti.

sattv, rajas aur tamas ke beech vargeekaran ko hindu dharm, bauddh dharm aur sikh dharm ke vibhinn pahaluon (aahaareeya aadaton sahit) mein dekha jaata hai, jahaan tamas sabse nimn hota hai. tamas ek shakti hoti hai jo ki andhakaar, maut, vinaash aur ajnyaaanata, susti aur pratirodh ko badhaava deti hai. tamas -prabhaavit jeevan ka parinaam karm ke anusaar avagun hota hai; ek nimn jeevan-roop mein padaavanati hai. ek taamasik jeevan ko aalasya, laaparavaahi, dvesh, dhokhaadhadi, asanvedanasheelata, aalochna aur galati dhoondhana, kuntha, lakshyaheen jeevan, taarkik soch ya yojana ki kami aur bahaane banaana, dvaara chihnit kiya jaata hai. taamasik gatividhiyon mein jyaada khaana adhik sona aur / ya drags aur madira ka sevan shaamil hai.

karm dharm aur dhaarmik dharm ka keindreeya siddhaant ke asveekruti ke kaaran yeh sabse nakaaraatmak gun hota hai: kisi ko bhi karm karna chaahiye aur usase anadekhi naheen karna chaahiye.[tathya vaanchhit]

shaastreeya bhaarateeya darshan ke chhah schoolon mein ek saankhya hai jismein in gunon ko paaribhaashit kiya gaya hai aur vistrut vivran diya gaya hai. teenon gunon mein se pratyek ki apni vishisht visheshataaen hain aur yeh maana jaata hai ki sab kuchh in teenon se bana hai. tamas sabse nimn, bhaari, dheemi aur sust sabse hota hai (udaaharan ke liye, pruthvi ka ek patthar ya gaanth). yeh raajas ki oorja aur sattv ki chamak se rahit hota hai.

tamas ka kabhi bhi tamas dvaara virodh naheen kiya ja sakta hai. iska pratirodh rajas (kaarravaai) ke maadhyam se kiya ja sakta hai aur tamas se seedhe sattv mein parivrtit karna aur bhi mushkil ho sakta hai.

  • "aapko pata hona chaahiye, he arjun, bhram ka kaaran tamas hota hai, ajnyaaan dvaara janmi sabhi cheejon ko yeh das bana leta hai; laaparavaahi asaavadhaanata aur nidraaluta." (geeta 14:8)
  • "he arjun, ajnyaaan, jad padaarth ki ek vishisht sthiti, laaparavaahi aur bhram bhi hai; jab inka janm hota hai tab tamas haavi ho jaata hai." (geeta14:13)
  • jab kisi ki mrutyu raajas mein hoti hai tab vah us kaarya ko poora karne ke liye fir se janm leta hai: usi tarah tamas mein mrutyu hone ke baad usaka janm ek jaanavar ke kokh se hota hai."(geeta 14:15)
  • "chaudahavein din: jab koi chauthe sthiti mein pravesh karta hai, vah samay par kaaboo pa leta hai aur aur raajas, taamas aur satv teen gunon ko paata hai" (SGGS [1])
  • "jo log banaae gaye kai roopon ke saath sattv safed prakaash, raajas-laal junoon aur tamas-kaale andhere, parameshvar ke bhaya ka paalan, ki oorja lete hain." (SGGS [2])

  • "raajas, oorjaavaan gatividhi ki gunavatta door paarit karega. taamas, sust andhere ki gunavatta ko door paarit karega. saatvaas, shaantipoorn prakaash ki gunavatta mein door ke roop mein achhi tarah se paarit karega. jo bhi dekha gaya use door paarit karega. keval pavitra sant ki shabd vinaash se pare hai" (SGGS [5])
