shabdaansh-maala (angreji: syllabary, sileberi) likhit chihnon ke aise samooh ko kehte hai jiska har ek chinh kisi ek ki shabdaansh dhvani darshaata hai aur jinhein jodkar shabd banaae jaate hain. shabdaansh-maalaaon aur varnamaalaaon mein ek gahra frk hai ki shabdaansh-maalaaon mein ek hi svar ya vyanjan shaamil karne vaale chihnon ka roop milta-julata naheen hota. udaaharan ke liye devanaagari mein (jo ek varnamaala hai) 'ka' aur 'ki' shabdaanshon mein 'k' ki dhvani aati hai aur donon mein is roop ka ek hi varn dekha ja sakta hai. iske vipreet Japani bhaasha mein istemaal hone waali heeraagaana shabdaansh-maala mein 'ka' ko 'か' likha jaata hai aur 'ki' ko 'き' - in donon mein 'k' vyanjan saamaan hone ke baavajood inke roop ek doosare se bilkul naheen milte.[1]

shabdaansh-maala ko angreji mein "sileberi" (syllabary) aur arabi mein "maktaaya" (مaaقaaطaaعaaیaaہ) kaha jaata hai. shabdaansh ko angreji mein "silebal" (syllable) kehte hain. chitralipi ke chihnon ko angreji mein logograim (logogram) ya idiyograim (ideogram) kehte hain.
