raani padmini, chittaud ki raani thi. raani padmini ke saahas aur balidaan ki gauravagaatha itihaas mein amar hai. sinhal dweep ke raaja gandharv sen aur raani chanpaavati ki beti padmini chittaud ke raaja ratanasinh ke saath byaahi gayi thi. raani padmini bahut khoobsoorat thi aur unki khoobsoorti par ek din Delhi ke sultaan alaauddeen khilji ki buri najar pad gayi.[1] alaauddeen kisi bhi keemat par raani padmini ko haasil karna chaahata tha, isliye usane chittaud par hamla kar diya. raani padmini ne aag mein koodakar jaan de di, lekin apni aan-baan par aaainch naheen aane di. isvi san 1303 mein chittaud ke lootane wala alaauddeen khilji tha jo raajasi sundari raani padmini ko paane ke liye laalayit tha. shruti yeh hai ki usane darpan mein raani ki pratibinb dekha tha aur uske sammohit karne vaale saundarya ko dekhkar abhibhoot ho gaya tha. lekin kuleen raani ne lajja ko bachaane ke liye jauhar karna behtar samjha.[2]

padmini sinhal dweep (Sri Lanka) ki adviteeya sundari raajakanya tatha chittaud ke raaja bheemasinh athva ratnasinh ki raani thi. uske roop, yauvan aur jauhar vrat ki katha, madhyakaal se lekar vartamaan kaal tak chaaranon, bhaaton, kaviyon, dharmaprachaarakon aur lokagaayakon dvaara vividh roopon evam aashayon mein vyakt hui hai. padmini sambandhi kathaaon mein sarvatr yeh sveekaar kiya gaya hai ki alaauddeen aisa kar sakta tha lekin kisi vishvasaneeya tatha likhit pramaan ke abhaav mein aitihaasik drushti se ise poornataya satya maan lena kathin hai.

sultaan ke saath chittaud ki chadhaai mein upasthit ameer khusaro mein ek itihaasalekhak ki sthiti se na to 'taareekhe alaai' mein aur na sahrudaya kavi ke roop mein alaauddeen ke bete khijr khaaain aur Gujarat ki raani devaladevi ki premagaatha 'masanavi khijr khaaain' mein hi iska kuchh sanket kiya hai. iske atirikt paravarti faarasi itihaasalekhakon ne bhi is sanbadh mein kuchh bhi naheen likha hai. keval farishta ne chittaud ki chadhaai (san 1303) ke lagbhag 300 varsh baad aur jaayaseekrut 'padmaavat' (rachanaakaal 1540 E.) ki rachana ke 70 varsh pashchaat san 1610 mein 'padmaavat' ke aadhaar par is vruttaant ka ullekh kiya jo tathya ki drushti se vishvasaneeya naheen kaha ja sakta. ojha ji ka kathan hai ki padmaavat, taareekhe farishta aur itihaasakaar taad ke sankalanon mein tathya keval yaheen hai ki chadhaai aur ghere ke baad alaauddeen ne chittaud ko vijit kiya, vahaaain ka raaja ratnasen maara gaya aur usaki raani padmini ne rajput ramaniyon ke saath jauhar ki agni mein aatmaahuti di. iske atirikt anya sab baatein kalpit hain.

sinhal dweep ki raajakanya ke roop mein padmini ki sthiti to ghor anaitihaasik hai (ojha). itihaasakaar ojha ji ne ratnasinh ki avasthiti siddh karne ke liye kunbhalagadh ka jo prashastilekh prastut kiya hai, usamein use mevaad ka svaami aur samarasinh ka putr likha gaya hai, yadyapi yeh lekh bhi ratnasinh ki mrutyu (1303) ke 157 varsh pashchaat san 1460 mein utkeern hua tha. bhattakaavyon, khyaaton aur anya prabandhon ke alaava paravarti kaavyon mein prasiddh 'padmini ke mahal' aur 'padmini ke taalaab' jaise smaarakon ke baabajood kisi thos aitihaasik pramaan ke bina ratnasinh ki raani ko padmini naam de dena athva padmini ko hathaat uske saath jod dena asangat hai. sambhav hai, sateetvaraksha ke nimitt jauhar ki aadarsh parampara ki netri chittaud ki ajnyaaatanaama raani ko, chaaranon aadi ne, shaastraprasiddh sarvashreshth naayika padmini naam dekar tatha sateepratha sambandhi puraavrutt ke aadhaar par is katha ko rochak tatha kathaarudhisanmat banaane ke liye, raani ki abhijaat jeevani ke saath anyaanya prasang gadh liye hon. astu, saindarya tatha aadarsh ke lokaprasiddh prateek tatha kaavyagat kalpit paatr ke roop mein hi padmini naam sveekaar kiya jaana theek lagta hai.
