maharshi vedavyaas dvaara rachit sanskrut bhaasha mein rache gaye athaaran puraanon mein se ek puraan granth hai. sabhi athaarah puraanon ki ganana mein 'padam puraan' ko dviteeya sthaan praapt hai. shlok sankhya ki drushti se bhi ise dviteeya sthaan rakha ja sakta hai. pehla sthaan skand puraan ko praapt hai. padam ka arth hai-'kamal ka pushp'. choonki srushti rachayita brahmaaji ne bhagavaanNarayan ke naabhi kamal se utpann hokar srushti-rachana sambandhi gyaan ka vistaar kiya tha, isliye is puraan ko padam puraan ki sanjnyaa di gayi hai. is puraan mein bhagavaan vishnu ki vistrut mahima ke saath, bhagavaan shreeraam tatha shreekrushn ke charitra, vibhinn teerthon ka maahaatmya shaalagraam ka svaroop, tulasi-mahima tatha vibhinn vraton ka sundar varnan hai.[1]

'brahm puraan' ganana ki drushti se sarvapratham gina jaata hai. parantu iska taatparya yeh naheen hai ki yeh praacheenatam hai. kaal ki drushti se iski rachana bahut baad mein hui hai. is puraan mein saakaar brahm ki upaasana ka vidhaan hai. ismein 'brahm' ko sarvopari maana gaya hai. iseeliye is puraan ko pratham sthaan diya gaya hai. karmakaand ke badh jaane se jo vikrutiyaan tatkaaleen samaaj mein fail gayi theen, unka vistrut varnan bhi is puraan mein milta hai. yeh samast vishv brahm ki ichha ka hi parinaam hai. iseeliye usaki pooja sarvapratham ki jaati hai.
vistaar
sampoorn 'brahm puraan' mein do sau chhiyaalees adhyaaya hain. iski shlok sankhya lagbhag chaudah hajaar hai. is puraan ki katha lomaharshan soot ji evam shaunak rishiyon ke samvaad ke maadhyam se varnit hai. 'soorya vansh' ke varnan ke uparaant 'chandr vansh' ka vistaar se varnan hai. ismein shriKrishna ke alaukik charitra ka vishesh mahattv darshaaya gaya hai. yaheen par jamboo dweep tatha anya dveepon ke varnan ke saath-saath bhaaratavarsh ki mahima ka vivran bhi praapt hota hai. bhaaratavarsh ke varnan mein Bhaarat ke mahatvapoorn teerthon ka ullekh bhi is puraan mein kiya gaya hai. ismein 'Shiv-paarvati' aakhyaan aur 'shri Krishna charitra' ka varnan bhi vistaarapoorvak hai. 'varaah avataar ','nrusinh avataar' evam 'vaaman avataar' aadi avataaron ka varnan sthaan-sthaan par kiya gaya hai.
vishay vastu

yeh puraan sarg, pratisrg, vansh, manvatanr aur vanshaanucharit –in paaainch mahattvapoorn lakshanon se yukt hai. bhagavaan vishnu ke svaroop aur pooja upaasana ka pratipaadan karne ke kaaran is puraan ko vaishnav puraan bhi kaha gaya hai. is puraan mein vibhinn pauraanik aakhyaanon aur upaakhyaanon ka varnan kiya gaya hai, jiske maadhyam se bhagavaan vishnu se sambandhit bhaktipoorn kathaanakon ko anya puraanon ki apeksha adhik vistrut dhang se prastut kiya hai. padam-puraan srushti ki utpatti arthaat brahma dvaara srushti ki rachana aur anek prakaar ke anya jnyaaanon se paripoorn hai tatha anek vishyon ke gambheer rahasyon ka ismein udghaatan kiya gaya hai. ismein srushti khand, bhoomi khand aur uske baad svarg khand mahattvapoorn adhyaaya hai. fir brahm khand aur uttar khand ke saath kriya yog saar bhi diya gaya hai. ismein anek baatein aisi hain jo anya puraanon mein bhi kisi-na-kisi roop mein mil jaati hain. kintu padam puraan mein vishnu ke mahattv ke saath shankar ki anek kathaaon ko bhi liya gaya hai. shankar ka vivaah aur uske uparaant anya rishi-muniyon ke kathaanak tatv vivechan ke liye mahattvapoorn hai.[2]
vidvaanon ke anusaar ismein paanch aur saat khand hain. kisi vidvaan ne paanch khand maane hain aur kuchh ne saat. paanch khand is prakaar hain-
1.srushti khand: is khand mein bheeshm ne srushti ki utpatti ke vishay mein pulastya se poochha. pulastya aur bheeshm ke samvaad mein brahma ke dvaara rachit srushti ke vishay mein bataate hue shankar ke vivaah aadi ki bhi charcha ki.
2.bhoomi khand: is khand mein bheeshm aur pulastya ke samvaad mein kashyap aur aditi ki santaan, parampara srushti, srushti ke prakaar tatha anya kuchh kathaaen sankalit hai.
3.svarg khand: svarg khand mein svarg ki charcha hai. manushya ke gyaan aur Bhaarat ke teerthon ka ullekh karte hue tatvajnyaaan ki shiksha di gayi hai.
4. brahm khand: is khand mein purushon ke kalyaan ka sulabh upaaya dharm aadi ki vivechan tatha nishiddh tatvon ka ullekh kiya gaya hai. paataal khand mein Ram ke prasang ka kathaanak aaya hai. isse yeh pata chalta hai ki bhakti ke pravaah mein vishnu aur Ram mein koi bhed naheen hai. uttar khand mein bhakti ke svaroop ko samajhaate hue yog aur bhakti ki baat ki gayi hai. saakaar ki upaasana par bal dete hue jalandhar ke kathaanak ko vistaar se liya gaya hai.
5.kriyaayog saar khand: kriyaayog saar khand mein Krishna ke jeevan se sambandhit tatha kuchh anya sankshipt baaton ko liya gaya hai. is prakaar yeh khand saamaanyat: tatv ka vivechan karta hai.
