laung (vaanaspatik naam : Syzygium aromaticum ; malayalam : കaaരaaയaaാaaമaa്aaപaaൂ; angreji:Cloves) mateinsi kul (Myrtaceae) ke 'yoojeeniya kairiyofaaileta' (Eugenia caryophyllata) naamak madhyam kad vaale sadaabahaar vruksh ki sookhi hui pushp kalika hai. laung ka angreji paryaayavaachi klov (clove) hai, jo laitin shabd klaivas (clavus) se nikla hai. is shabd se keel ya kaaainte ka bodh hota hai, jisse laung ki aakruti ka saadrushya hai. doosari taraf laung ka laitin naam 'pipr' (Piper) sanskrut/malayalam/tamil ke 'pippali' aaya hua lagta hai. laung ek prakaar ka masaala hai. is masaale ka upayog bhaarateeya pakavaano me bahutaayat me kiya jaata hai. ise aushadhi ke roop me bhi upayog me liya jaata hai.

laung ke fal guchhon mein soorkh laal rang ke khilte hain, kintu pushp khilne ke pehle hi tod liye jaate hain. taaji kaliyon ka rang lalaai liye hue ya hara rahata hai. laung ke chaar nukeele bhaag baahyadal (sepal) hain tatha andar ke gol hisse mein dal (petal) aur unase dhainka hua aavashyak bhaag hai, pumang (ardroecium) evam jaayaang (gynaeceum). neeche ka hissa fool ka danthal hai. jaise hi in kaliyon ka rang halka gulaabi hota hai evam ve khilti hai, inhein chun chunakar haath se tod liya jaata hai. kabhi kabhi ped ke neeche kapda bichha dete hain aur shaakha ko peetakar in kaliyon ko gira dete hain. achhe mausam mein inhein dhoop mein sookha lete hain, kintu badli hone par inhein aag par sookhaate hain. kabhi kabhi kaliyon ko sukhaane se pehle garam paani se dho lete hain. sukhaane ke baad keval 40 pratishat laung bachata hai.
