khaasi (ya khaasiya, ya khaasa) ek janajaati hai jo Bhaarat ke meghaalaya, asam tatha Bangladesh ke kuchh kshetron mein nivaas karte hain. ye khaasi tatha jayantiya ki pahaadiyon mein rahanevaali ek maatrukulamoolak janajaati hai. inka rang kaala mishrit peela, naak chapati, muainh chauda tatha sughad hota hai. ye log hrushtapusht aur svabhaavat: parishrami hote hai. stri tatha purush donon sir par bade bade baal rakhate hain, nirdhan log sir muaindava lete hain.

khaasiyon ki visheshata unka maatrumoolak parivaar hai. vivaah hone par pati sasuraal mein rahata hai. paranparaanusaar puroosh ki vivaahapoorv kamaai par maatruparivaar ka aur vivaahottar kamaai par patneeparivaar ka adhikaar hota hai. vanshaavali naari se chalti hai aur sampatti ki svaamini bhi vahi hai. sanyukt parivaar ki sanrakshika kanishth putri hoti hai. ab kuchh khaasiye Shillong aadi mein sanyukt parivaar se alag vyaapaar, naukri aadi krushitr vrutti bhi karne lage hain. paramparaagat paarivaarik jaayadaad bechana nishiddh hai. vivaah ke liye koi vishesh rasm naheen hai. ladki aur maata pita ki sahamati hone par yuvak sasuraal mein aana jaana shuroo kar deta hai aur santaan hote hi vah sthaayi roop se vahi rahane lagta hai. sanbandhavichhed bhi aksar saralataapoorvak hote rahate hain. santaan par pita ka koi adhikaar naheen hota.

khaasiyon mein ishvar ki kalpana hote hue bhi keval upadevataaon ki pooja hoti hai. kuchh khaasiyon ne kaali aur mahaadev jaise hindu devadeviyon ko apna liya hai. rog hone par ye log oshadhi ka upayog na kar sambandhit devata ko bali dvaara prasann karte hain. shav ka daah kiya jaata hai aur mrutyu ke turant baad kaag ki aur kabhi kabhi bail ya gaaya ki bhi bali di jaati hai. mrutyuparaant maheenon tak karmakaand ka silsila chalta rahata hai aur ant mein avashshti asthiyon ko parivaar-samaadhishaala mein rakhate samay bail ki bali di jaati hai aur is avsar par teen chaar din tak nrutyagaan tatha daavatein hoti hain. khaasiyon ka vishvaas hai ki jinka antyeshti sanskaar vidhivt sampann hota hai unki aatmaaeain ishvar ke udyaan mein nivaas karti hain, anyatha pashu-pakshi bankar pruthvi par ghoomti hain.

khaasiya khetihr hain aur dhaan ke atirikt naarangi, paan tatha supaari ka utpaadan karte hain. ye log kapda bunana bilkul naheen jaante aur etatsanbandhi aavashyakta baahar se poori karte hai.

khaasiya anekaanek shaakhaaon mein vibhkt hain. khaasi, sinteing, vaar aur linggam, unki chaar mukhya shaakhaaeain hain. inke beech paraspar vivaahasanbandh hota hai. keval apne kul ya kabeele mein vivaahasanbandh nishiddh hai.

pratyek kabeele mein raajavansh, purohit, mantri tatha jan saamaanya ye chaar shreniyaaain hain. kintu vaar shaakha mein vishisht saamaajik shreniyaaain naheen hain. kabeele ke sardaar ya mantri sambandhit vishisht shreni ke sadasya hi ban sakte hain. ek kabeele mein stri hi sarvochch shaasak hoti hai aur vah apne putr athva bhaanje ko lingadoh (mukhya mantri) banaakar uske dvaara shaasan karti hai.

anek khaasiyon ne pichhle dedh-do sau varsh mein isaai tatha hindu dharm sveekaar kar liya hai, fir bhi vibhinn mataavalanbi ek hi parivaar ke sadasya hain. Shillong khaasiyon ke kshetr mein sthit hai; falat: khaasiyon par baahari sanskruti tatha aadhunik sabhyata ka baraabar prabhaav pad raha hain. ab anek khaasiye vyaapaar tatha naukri aur kuchh padh likhkar adhyaapaki evam vakaalat jaise peshe bhi karne lage hain.
