ashtabaahu (aaktopas) molaska sangh ka ek samudri praani hai. is raatrichr jeev ko devilfish bhi kehte hain. isi sangh mein ghongha, seep, shankh ityaadi jeev bhi hain. ashtabaahuon ki ganana sheershapaad varg mein ki jaati hain. sheershapaad varg ke jeevon ki apni kuchh visheshataaeain hain jo anya choornapraavaaro (molaskon) mein naheen pai jaateen. mukhya visheshataaeain nimnalikhit hain: unke shareer ki rachana tatha sangathan anya jaatiyon se uchch koti ki hoti hai. ve aakaar mein bade sudaul, bahut tej chalanevaale, maansaahaari, bade bhayaanak tatha koor svabhaav ke hote hain. bahuton mein prakavach (baahari kada khol) nahi hota. ye pruthvi ke praaya: sabhi ushn samudron mein paae jaate hain.

masikshepi (katal fish), kaalakshepi (lolaaigo), saamaanya ashtabaahu, skvid tatha mrudunaavik (aargonaut) ashtabaahuon ke udaaharan hain. poorn vayask bheem (jaaeaint) skvid ki lanbaai 50 foot, neeche ke jabade 4 inch tak lambe aur aankhon ka vyaas 15 inch tak hota hai.

saamaanya ashtabaahu ko samudra ka bhayankar jeev bhi kehte hain. uttari samudron mein tal par adhiktar rahata hai. ismein aath lambi-lambi maansal baahueain hoti hain. isi se is praani ka naam ashtabaahu pada hai. saamaanya ashtabaahu ki do vipreet baahuon ke siron ke beech ki doori 12 foot aur prashaant saagareeya bheem ashtabaahu ki 30 foot tak hoti hai. iske mukh ke chaaron aur ek bahut badi keep (fnel) ke samaan gadh‌aada hota hai jiska mukh praavaar ke bheetar tak chala jaata hai. baahueain aapas mein jhilli se judi hoti hain. inke bheetar tal par bahut se vruttaakaar chooshako ki do paktiyaaain hoti hain. in chooshakon dvaara ashtabaahu chattaanon se badi majabooti se chipka rahata hai aur anya samudri jantuon ko ek ya adhik baahuon se prabalata se pakad leta hain. judi hui baahueain bhi pakadne ka kaam karti hain. mukh mein ek danteeli jihva bhi hoti hai.

ashtabaahu maansaahaari hote hain. bahut se ashtabaahu ek saath rahate hain. aur apne liye pattharon ya chattaanon ka ek aashrayasthal bana lete hain. ve ek saath raat ko khaane ki khoj mein nikalte hain aur fir apne aashrayasthal par laut aate hain. moti ke liye dubaki lagaanevaale gotaakhor, ya samudra mein nahaanevaale, bahudha inki shaktishaali baahuon aur chooshakon ke fandon mein padkar ghaayal ho jaate hain. mrudunaavik (aargonaut) bhi ashtabaahu jaati ka praani hai jo khule samudra ke oopari tal par tairata paaya jaata hai. maada mrudunaavik mein ek baahm prakachav hota hai, jo bahut sudar, komal aur kuntalaakaar hota hai. yeh prakavach is jantu ki do baahuon ke bahut chaude aur chiptai siro ki tvacha ke ras se banta hai aur ye baahueain unako badi sudanrata se uthaae rahati hain. jab tak ande paripakva hokar footate naheen tab tak maada isi baahm prakavach mein rakhakar ande ko seti hain. nar mrudunaavik mein, jo stri mrudunaavik se chhota hota hai, baahm prakavach naheen hota.

ashtabaahu nar tatha stri (maada) donon hi prakaar ke hote hain aur usaki pichhli ek baahu ke roop mein kuchh bhed hota hai. isko nishechaangeeya (hektokautilaaijd) baahu kehte hain bah yaahu prajanan ke liye andon ke nishechan (frtilaaijeshan) mein kaam aati hai. nar mein do prajanan granthiyaaain aur maada mein do prajanan naliyaaain hoti hai. sahavaas mein nar apni nishechaangeeya baahu ko, jismein shukrabhar (spamaitofors) hote hain, stri ki praavaar guha (maintalakaibiti) mein daalkar apne shareer se us baahu ka poorn vichhed kar deta hai. baahu mein ke shukraanuon se ande tab nishikt ho jaate hain. maada apne andon ko ya to chhote chhote samoohon mein ya ek se ek lipte ek dore ke roo p mein deti hai aur kisi baahari padaarth se lataka deti hai.

ande khaadya padaarth se bhare hote hain. inmein vibhaajanaapoorn hota hai aur jantu ke vikaas mein dinbh naheen banta.
