praacheen sanskrut granthon mein 'uttari Bhaarat' ko aaryaavart (shaabdik arth : aaryon ka nivaasasthaan) kaha gaya hai.

praacheen saahitya mein aaryaavart

rigved mein aaryon ka nivaasasthal "saptasindhu" pradesh ke naam se abhihit kiya jaata hai. rigved ke nadeesookt (10/75) mein aaryanivaas mein pravaahit honevaali nadiyon ka ekatr varnan hai jismein mukhya ye hain - kubha (Kabul nadi), krugu (kurram), gomati (gomal), sindhu, parushni (raavi), shutudri (satalaj), vitsta (Jhelum), sarasvati, yamuna tatha ganga. yeh varnan vaidik aaryon ke nivaasasthal ki seema ka nirdeshak maana ja sakta hai.

braahman granthon mein kuru paanchaal desh aarya sanskruti ka kendra maana gaya hai jahaaain anek yajnyaayaagon ke vidhaan se yeh bhoobhaag "prajaapati ki naabhi" kaha jaata tha. shatapath braahman ka kathan hai ki kuru paanchaal ki bhaasha hi sarvottam tatha praamaanik hai.

upanishdkaal mein aaryasabhyata ki pragati kaashi tatha videh janapadon tak faili. falat: Punjab se mithila tak ka vistrut bhoobhaag aaryon ka pavitra nivaas upanishdon mein maana gaya.

aaryaavart ki seema

dharmasootron mein aaryaavart ki seema ne vishay mein bada matabhed hai. vashishthadharmasootr (1.8-9) mein aaryaavart ki yeh prakhyaat seema nirdhaarit ki gayi hai ki yeh aadarsh (vinshan; sarasvati ke lop hone ka sthaan) ke poorv, kaalak van (prayaag) ke pashchim, paariyaatr tatha vindhya ke uttar aur himaalaya ke dakshin mein hai. anya do maton ka bhi yahaan ullekh hai ki (k) aaryaavart ganga aur yamuna ke beech ka bhoobhaag hai aur (kh) usamein Krishna mrug nirbaadh sancharan karta hai. baudhaayan (dharmasootr 1.1.27), patanjali (mahaabhaashya 2.4.10 par) tatha manu (manusmruti 2.17) ne bhi vasishthokt mat ko hi praamaanik maana hai. manu ki drushti mein aaryaavart madhyadesh se bilkul milta hai aur uske bheetar "brahmavart" naamak ek chhota, parantu pavitratam bhoobhaag hai, jo sarasvati aur drushadvati nadiyon dvaara seemit hai aur yahaan ka paramparaagat aachaar sadaachaar maana jaata hai. aaryaavart ki yahi praamaanik seema thi aur iske baahar ke desh mlechh desh maane jaate the, jahaan teerthayaatra ke atirikt jaane par ishti ya sanskaar karna aavashyak hota tha. baudhaayanadharmasootr (1.1.31) mein avanti, ang, magadh, suraashtr, dakshinaapath, upaavrut, sindhu-sauveer aadi desh mlechh deshon mein ginaae gaye hain.

parantu aaryon ki sanskruti aur sabhyata braahmanon ke dhaarmik utsaah ke kaaran anya deshon mein bhi faili jinhein aaryaavart ka ansh ka na maanana satya ka apalaap hoga. medhaatithi ka is vishay mein mat bada hi yuktipoorn prateet hota hai. unka kehna hai ki ""jis desh mein sadaachaari kshatriya raaja mlechhon ko jeetkar chaaturvarnya ki pratishtha kare aur mlechhon ko aaryaavart ke chaandaalon ke samaan vyavasthit kare, vah desh bhi yagya ke liye uchit sthaan hai, kyonki pruthvi svat: apavitr naheen hoti, balki apavitron ke sansarg se hi dooshit hoti hai"" (manu 2.23 par medhaatithibhaashya). aise vijit mlechhon deshon ko bhi medhaatithi aaryaavart ke antargat maanane ke pakshapaati hain. sanskruti ki pragati ki yeh maang thukaraai naheen ja sakti. tabhi to mahaabhaarat Punjab ko, jo kabhi aarya-sanskruti ka vaidikkaaleen kendra tha, do din bhi thaharane laayak naheen maanata (karnaparv 43.5-8), kyonki yavanon ke prabhaav ke kaaran shuddhaachaar ki drushti se us yug mein yeh nitaant aachaaraheen ban gaya tha. aaryaavart hi guptakaal mein 'kumaari dweep' ke naam se prasiddh tha. puraanon mein aaryaavart "bhaaratavarsh" ke naam se hi visheshat: nirdisht hai (vishnupuraan 2.3.1, maarkandeyapuraan 57.59 aadi).
